This autumn the Pinacoteca Agnelli will present the largest exhibition dedicated to the Italian artist Salvo.
Opening on Friday, 1 November 2024 (in the midst of Art Week) at the Pinacoteca will be presented the exhibition entitled “Arrivare in tempo”, which will occupy all three floors of the building creating a retrospective never before so full and stratified.
Curated by Sarah Cosulich and Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti, the exhibition in Turin is the biggest project ever dedicated to Salvo after his death in 2015.
The exhibition aims to underline how his approach to painting, in its recurring thematic cycles, in the attention to historical-artistic references and the exploration of light, has always been in continuity with his first conceptual research.
Born in Sicily in 1947, Salvo moved to Turin as a child in 1956 where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. After an initial phase in which he worked as a conceptual artist in close contact with the Arte Povera movement, since 1973 Salvo is dedicated exclusively to painting, unconventional choice for the cultural climate of the early 70’s.
A disciple of the art scene, for the next forty years, Salvo pursued a unique exploration and critical reflection on the medium of painting.
The exhibition will reveal how his painting has never been in contradiction with its initial conceptual phase, but instead absorbed the nature and intentions of the latter within a coherent artistic path.
Developed in close collaboration with the Salvo Archive, the exhibition will focus on some of the fundamental reasons for its artistic exploration: the concept of repetition and deepening of recurring motifs as both pictorial technique and conceptual urgency; Reflection on painting as a language and on language as an art; the relationship between art history and representation of everyday life.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a dedicated publication, designed to open to international public a critical interpretation of Salvo’s work.
