Fulvio Di Piazza was born in 1967 in Syracuse. In 1993, he graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts of Urbino. From 1994 to 1996, he devoted himself mainly to music, performing as a drummer with several bands from the underground scene in Palermo. He creates large-scale oil paintings depicting fantastical scenes with lush forests, spirals of volcanic smoke, islands suspended in the sky, and vividly colored sunlight. These works often feature enormous floating heads or drifting animals that, upon closer inspection, are actually composed of delicately and meticulously detailed landscapes. Together with artists Alessandro Bazan, Francesco De Grandi, and Andrea Di Marco, Di Piazza was part of the so-called “Palermo School,” an artistic association founded in 1997 that became an important force within the Italian art scene during the 1990s and 2000s. In March 2018, RISO Museum of Contemporary Art of Sicily paid tribute to these four artists with a group exhibition. Di Piazza has exhibited extensively both in Italy and abroad, in both solo and group exhibitions. His works are held in several permanent collections, including the RISO Museum of Contemporary Art of Sicily and the URBAN NATION Museum in Berlin. Over the years, the artist has taken part in prestigious group exhibitions on painting at important Italian institutions, including the GAM Palermo in 2018 and the Civic Gallery of Trento in 2020. Since 2014, he has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo, in the city where he currently lives and works.
