Matt Phillips’s painting emerges slowly, through a delicate creative process that closely resembles musical dynamics, in a crescendo of intensity veiling on veiling of color. Orphic visions, in which some patterns by Sonia Delaunay echo from afar, take shape in the corpus of works created for the exhibition, around thirty medium and large-sized canvases. Their titles suggest intense narratives, which unfold along rigorous geometries, however defined as “figurative” by the artist himself. The painted image almost never completely fills the canvas, but autonomously seeks its own space within the support, which becomes pure margin.
In each work Matt Phillips identifies a compositional rhythm and a sort of optical vibration that are able to open a portal between artist and audience, creating full involvement-recognition.
Piano, Piano will open at the Studio d’Arte Raffaelli in Trento on Thursday 6 April 2017 at 6.30 pm and will be set up until 1 June 2017. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with an interview by TimothĂ©e Chaillou to the artist.
