Jane Alexander è una delle più importanti artiste contemporanee che lavorano in Sudafrica ad aver ricevuto riconoscimenti internazionali. Nata a Johannesburg nel 1959 e cresciuta durante l’apartheid, attraverso le sue sculture figurative, installazioni e fotografie mostra le sue preoccupazioni riguardo le attuali questioni socio-politiche in Sudafrica. L’artista Sudafricana ha acquisito notorietà all’inizio della sua carriera, producendo Butcher Boys 1985–86, un lavoro chiave all’interno della collezione della National Gallery sudafricana. Questo lavoro consiste di tre figure a grandezza naturale cornute, sedute pensierosamente su una panchina. Si pensa che questo lavoro sia un commento sugli abusi di potere, tortura e detenzione emblematici dell’era dell’apartheid. Jane Alexander is one of the most important contemporary artists working in South Africa to have received international recognition. Born in Johannesburg in 1959, her figurative sculptures, installations, tableaux and photomontages are informed by the experience of growing up under apartheid and can be read as a response to that political and social environment. Alexander rose to prominence early in her career, producing Butcher Boys 1985–86, a key work within the South African National Gallery’s collection. This work consists of three horned life-sized figures, sitting pensively on a bench. It is thought that this work is a comment on the abuses of power, torture and detention emblematic of the apartheid era Jane Alexander’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, collections and biennales around the world.
